Fashion Net Education Center Düsseldorf is New Fashion Business Forum for Trade and Consumers. Focus of 2012 Event: Asia

The second Fashion Net Education Center takes place on February 5, 2012, in Düsseldorf and is timed to coincide with city’s fashion trade events Premium, Supreme, CPD Signatures, and Showroom Order Days. With this year’s spotlight on Asia’s role in fashion industry innovation, the unique event offers educational presentations and seminars about current fashion business topics to trade visitors and is also open to consumers. Düsseldorf, Germany – Movers and shakers of the fashion world in town for international fashion trade events Premium, Supreme, CPD Signatures, and Showroom Order Days will meet at the second Fashion Net Education Center (FNEC) in Düsseldorf on February 5. Fashion enthusiasts and anyone interested in the business side of fashion can meet them in a rare one-day industry event that is open to trade visitors and consumers.

Düsseldorf will be buzzing with fashion business representatives from all over the world around February 5 as they travel there for serious business at the various trade events. FNEC offers a platform for all of them to get together and create synergies through an educational program that features speakers and events from all fashion industry areas and is designed to break down barriers between the various areas.

The theme of this year’s FNEC is “Asian Roots,” inspired by industry innovations from Asia such as QR-Codes, already heavily employed in Japan but not well known in other parts of the world, and new production methods in China. Speakers and topics include Jenny Brucherseifer (Fashion Made in China); Thai designer shooting star Pim Sukhahuta (on her label “Sretsis”); industrial designer Jannis Hülsen (Xylimum – Bacteria, Fabric Sources of the Future?); American fashion designer Jean Yu (180 by Jean Yu); and German Gala Magazine’s Fashion Editor Marcus Luft (From Runway to Reality).

FNEC is organized by Fashion Net, an association of Düsseldorf-based fashion-related businesses, organizations, and designers, such as Bugatti, Fashion Square GmbH, Fashion Design Institute, Düsseldorf Trade Shows and the city’s Economic Development Office. FNEC takes place at Düsseldorf’s Cubic Studios. The event is open to everyone, and tickets are available for single events (starting at € 9) or the entire day (starting at € 59).

Demonstrating a masterful use of graphite,paint markers, acrylic, spray paint and stencils, Aniekan Udofia epitomizes a sophisticated understanding of the African localization of Western pop culture.

With eyes that track, smiles that beguile and flowing patterns, the viewer is instantly transported into the hip-hop culture of Udofia’s childhood in Nigeria. An inmate glimpse into simple pleasures such as a new cassingle brought from the capital and shared with friends over a boom-box and pigeon cypher, the collection’s use of bold colors is a nod to Nigerian traditional artistry while the techniques ground the works firmly in a contemporary American style.

“Washington, DC — West African highlife music permeated American-born Nigerian artist Aniekan Udofia’s household when his family moved from Washington DC to Nigeria in the late 1980s. That was until “The Village B-boys” returned from working in the big cities with mix tapes of the latest hip hop. Udofia remembers tracing the sounds of LL Cool J to the boom-box of an old lady pounding corn with a mortar and pestle to the beat. She would explain, “This, this is just some music my grandson brought back from the Lagos.” Off he would run to the market buying a local musician’s cassette to record over it with the village bboy’s mix-tape. This is how hip-hop seeped into his world.

Stoically, he recalls his parents’ distaste for Fela Kuti’s international hit Zombie but passive acceptance of KRS-1’s Black Cop. As record shops emerged Udofia’s attachment to hip-hop’s social commentary on issues such as violence, religion, gender wars and conspicuous consumption fully cemented, molding him into an artist who would tackle these same themes within the visual atheistics of both hip-hop and West Africa art.

Debuting February 4, 2012 at the Lamont Bishop Gallery in Washington, DC, Udofia’s latest series, The Village B-Boy is destined for 10-story walls in Uyo, his hometown in Nigeria, where its true audience will participate, remember and enjoy. In recent years, the art world has rallied around the concept of public art in emerging markets, however the abstract extrapolation of themes seemingly caters to the critic or collector. The Village B-boy is a derivation from this trend. The melding of traditionally inspired wax fabric prints alongside easily identifiable motifs of the golden age of hip-hop give the Western viewer a glimpse into the catholic/ubiquitous spread of slick rhymes over phat beats in beyond US borders. Whether the first time you heard Public Enemy was in Akwa Ibom State, London or New York the textured scenes represented in series will harken cheeky reminiscences days past.

Each contestant, representing countries like — Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Spain and Ethiopia, will be judged in three categories: personal introduction, talent and traditional wear as they compete for the title of Princess and Prince Malaika. The event will also feature performances by Eileen, violinist member of MCYO Symphony Orchestra and RHF Global Ambassador for Girl’s Education; Radha Dutta (India) owner of Kalalayam Dance Academy; and Mokihana (Hawaii), a traditional Hula teacher.

Nunu Wako, host of the Nunu Wako Show television program will serve as mistress of ceremony along with Jackson Mvunganyi, host of Voice of America’s Up Front, serving as master of ceremony. Fox 5 News anchor/reporter, Maureen Umeh is the celebrity guest of honor.

Judges for the competition include Brigitte Kobenan, Founder, Autism Community of Africa & Mrs. Congeniality World 2008; Ngozi Nmezi, Director, Office of African Affairs for D.C.’s Mayor Office; and Natalie York , D.C.-based singer/songwriter who has worked with Jon Secada and other renown musicians.

An event geared towards compassion, solidarity and empowerment, Little Malaika International will help raise funds and resources to provide scholarships and logistical support for girl’s education and special education for children with autism in post-conflict Cote d’Ivoire.

Linord Moudou, Founder of RACINES Heritage Foundation said, “Education empowers girls by providing them with the tools to shape their lives. As they see hope for their future, they can stand against violence, abuse and exploitation and aspire to live a better life.” “By helping children have access to education, we can help combat poverty.”
